Iluka the Mermaid was born at a time when I felt silenced, as though my voice wasn’t welcome, wasn’t worthy, or simply took up too much space. Mermaids have always fascinated me because across myths and cultures they are bound to voice: singing sailors into the unknown, speaking enchantments, and sometimes losing their voices altogether.

I think many of us carry these hidden stories within ourselves. We believe we’ve healed them, packed them away safely, moved on… and then life has a way of pulling them back to the surface.

Recently, I joined the most beautiful singing group @holisticharmonies something gentle, healing, and unexpectedly transformative. I’m beginning to hope that finding my voice physically through singing might help me trust my creative voice too… and soften that relentless inner critic.

I recently walked the coastal path on Anglesey with my lovely friend Jackie, something I’d wanted to do for a long time, but wasn’t sure I could.
Before I left, I said, “What if I can’t go on?”
And a wise one said, “Just put one foot in front of the other.”
Somewhere along those wild, wind-beaten cliffs… that became a mantra.
Because lately, life has felt a bit like that path, plans unravelling, things not flowing.
And still… one foot, then another.
And then came the magic…
Holy Island, seals, dolphins.
A reminder that even through the hardest stretches,
something beautiful might be waiting just ahead. 🌊✨

This is our woofer, the one and only Sage 🐾 She came to us from the dog rescue almost a decade ago, but really she rescued us 🤎 She likes to come and sit with me while I’m making, slowly edging her way closer and closer until I can’t move 😆 Here she is helping me make an owl🦉Bless our Sage 🐶

Here is the beginning of a barn owl wall piece, the final part of my recent triptych 🦉✨

I’ve especially loved creating the tiny pieces that will live inside her chest, little worlds within the work, holding their own quiet stories 🕯️🌿

Here she is, finally finished ✨🐦

This pigeon wall piece will, for now, live alongside her brother crow. I’ve always loved pigeons. When I was a teenager my bedroom was high up in the attic of my mum’s tall house, and my cat Elvis would sometimes escape out onto the roof to hunt. One day he brought me a pigeon and left it on my bed. My friends and I nursed that pigeon for days. We called him Chris 🕊️

Pigeons feel like the less revered aspect of doves, those archetypal symbols of peace, purity and the divine. Across cultures they’re linked to spirit and soul, messengers between realms. In dreams they often appear at times of softening, healing, or when a sense of grace is entering the psyche 🌿✨

Today is St George’s Day, and I can’t help but reflect on how he is often used as a symbol of patriotism, especially in today’s climate, when he was actually from Turkey and is the patron saint of many countries. A reminder that cultures have always intertwined and flowed into one another. Like St George, pigeons can be found all over the world 🌍

Here are the results from my last lot of rust dying and I’m so happy with how these look! I am planning to use some of them to make a barn owl wall piece, part of a triptych. @alisonbaileysmith can you spot one of the dolls dresses from your childhood?
