Wirral Country Park Visitors Centre Theatre Space, Thurstaston Beach - 23rd October - 26th October 2024
Funded by Wirral Borough of Culture 2024, this marked Flotsam Fables’ first solo exhibition, showcasing a collection of ten sculptures created to date.
Rooted in themes of mythology, shapeshifting, storytelling, and metamorphosis, Flotsam Fables’ sculptures bring legendary figures to life through intricate mixed-media dioramas. Each piece incorporates recycled and repurposed fabrics and materials, many of which were gathered from Wirral’s shoreline, weaving a narrative of transformation and sustainability.
At the heart of this work is the idea of giving discarded objects new value and meaning—a reflection of how we see and treat ourselves. In an imperfect world, we often overlook the parts we dislike, but just like the forgotten fragments washed ashore, there is beauty and purpose to be found in the overlooked and unwanted.
These sculptures invite us to embrace imperfection, to reimagine what is broken, and to recognise the hidden worth in both the materials around us and within ourselves. As part of the project, a public beach clean was held, where collected materials were repurposed into artworks and workshops, highlighting the connection between creativity and environmental responsibility.
A number of Flotsam Poppets workshops with members of the public and also eco schools teachers were run at the venue as part of the project.
